fall plaid vibes

If you are wondering why my photos look like they were taken in the rain, it is because they were!

My fall meandering this season has been very wet!  Not by choice.  It just couldn’t be helped – rainy days have been the norm here in Connecticut for way too long!

white fall

If you know anything about me, you know typical holiday colors are never my favorites.  And, white is one of my preferred colors.  White pumpkins are always the best pumpkins and I enjoy combining them with other neutrals or, sometimes other colors.

burgandy fall vibes

I really enjoy burgundy as an accent color for both fall and at Christmas time.

burgandy plants

Here I am sharing some great styling examples with white pumpkins and burgundy I recently found at Terrain in Westport.  Isn’t it a great combination?

fall burgandy

If you want to add some cozy feels when putting together your own fall vignettes, add a blanket or scarf.  Don’t discard ripped blankets in your favorite colorways.  They can be repurposed while styling your pumpkins!  If not blankets, fabric remnants or discarded corduroy or flannel shirts are also great to reuse!  If you have nothing of your own to utilize, thrift shops and consignment stores are great places to pick up items to use.  I never get rid of a piece of clothing or fabric I love…down the road it may turn up as part of a tablescape or made into a pumpkin!

white and burgandy decor

I hope you are inspired to put some white pumpkins and burgundy together this season.  If not, I’ll have some more traditional color combination examples next time!

unexpected fall colors

September

green pumpkin in chair

I don’t like orange as a basic fall décor color.  I’m mostly about neutrals, as you probably know.  And, I do love black.

black fall accents

So, it makes sense that I would like a black and white fall palette.  Let me show you what I mean!

stacked white pumpkins

On a recent trip one sunny afternoon to Terrain in Westport, Connecticut – my favorite garden store – I come upon some pairings of white pumpkins with some really dark colored plants that basically read like black.

pumpkins with black

I really love color choices that aren’t orange for fall and I particularly loved this unexpected pairing of black and white as an outdoor landscape color scheme.  What do you think?

falling for green

green pumpkins in chair

Gone are the days when pumpkins were only orange!  Those of us neutral décor lovers were certainly ecstatic when white pumpkins came onto the scene years ago…what could be better?!

But there are other options these days, and although white pumpkins are still my fave, some of the heirloom varieties make me weak in the knees!

Heirloom pumpkins are more widely available now – I recently saw some lovely ones priced very reasonably in shades of green and gray at Trader Joe’s.

Decorating for fall in hues of green takes on a whole new meaning when pumpkins in smokey sage can be added to the mix!

P.S.  Fun fact – for years I avoided wearing green because I have green eyes and I hated the attention when green clothing would accentuate my eyes!

outdoor at Terrain holiday

The holiday decor is out early this year and I think it is a great idea!  I would hope the early start would help eliminate crowds that could contribute to unhealthy shopping experiences.  In the interest of safety, I am sure many people are limiting their shopping to online.  I need to see things up close – I want to use all my senses when I experience holiday shopping!

I have friends in different parts of the country who can not experience one of my favorite stores to visit at the holidays – Terrain.  And, Terrain really needs to be experienced in person to fully appreciate it!  So whether you would rather not visit a store right now, or you just don’t live near a Terrain to visit in person – enjoy today’s photos.  These are some favorite glimpses of holiday from my last Terrain visit.

missing the candles

29
August

sized spoonful of chocolate terrarium

Yes, I hate Covid-19.  Like everyone else, I miss the normalcy of everyday living.

Never did it become clearer than celebrating my birthday week.

Just losing the simple opportunity of blowing out birthday candles was upsetting!  An official birthday celebration certainly does not seem complete without candles!

sized eating chocolate terrarium

Chocolate Terrarium served at Terrain Café in Westport – a birthday cake substitute with finesse!  Soft milk chocolate ganache, dark chocolate mousse, matcha morsels, and dark chocolate cake.

Everyone that has had a birthday since isolation began knows what I am talking about.  You try to make your birthday as normal as possible and then comes time for cake…and, of course, in the current climate, candle blowing is out of the question!

So, no candles this year.

Wishing you many years ahead of candle blowing!

table fern display

June

pretty fern arrangement

Without hosting any company for such a long stretch, my dining room table décor from Easter never got updated…what for?   A lot of home updates did get attended to during isolation – caulking, cleaning, filing, etc., but some of the seasonal décor definitely got neglected!

In an attempt to cheer myself up, I decided to get rid of the decorated Easter eggs and add something a little more appropriate to the season to my dining room table.  What better way to brighten spirits than  a trip to Terrain?!  I figured if I just bought a couple little indoor ferns, I could create something nice and low cost for my dining room table.

dining room ferns

Walking around Terrain’s nursery definitely helped pick up my mood – as it always does!  And, because I only needed some small ferns, I was able to leave without much of an investment.

My plan was to use some of my Ben Wolff white clay pots to make a simple fern display.  Ben Wolff is a potter that does some amazing work.  I was never a fan of the traditional color clay pot, (click here and/or here to see two ways I have painted them!)  and since I am about all things white, his white clay pots are perfect for my aesthetic!  (His gray pots are also beautiful!  I am lucky that Ben’s studio is right here in Connecticut – close enough to visit and purchase my pots directly from the studio!

ferns on table

I simply planted the ferns in the white pots and arranged them down the middle of the table with some moss.  Easy and so beautifully satisfying!  The components are anchored in a 3-foot-long trough I purchased at Terrain many years ago.  I use it all the time and it is perfect to protect the table from seasonal arrangements.  (I don’t think the exact one I have is still available for purchase, but if you search ‘trough’ on the Terrain website, you should find some great alternatives!)

ferns with watering can

(To make my arrangement complete – I just need to find the pretty little terrarium rocks I have to cover the top of the dirt in the pots.  If I can’t find where I put them, I will use some little shells or sea glass.)

I hope I have inspired you to add some new seasonal décor to your home – company or no company!

snowy village

If you follow this blog, you know one of my favorite places to shop is Terrain.  I am super lucky to have a store location so close to me in Westport, CT.  Each year, I feel an obligation to share some photos with you because I know many of you are not able to shop at this fabulous store!

Each holiday (actually, each season) Terrain has a really wonderful open house and it is one of the best places to visit for some real holiday inspiration.

This may be the first year since it opened that I did not attend the holiday open house at Terrain.  I know I usually share some photos from the day since the store is so inspiring!

A few followers that live out of the area emailed and asked me about the open house – hoping to see some photos again this year.  Since I don’t want to disappoint…I made a trip over last Sunday morning so I could take a few photos and share them with you!  Walking around early on a Sunday morning with a cup of coffee proved to be a peaceful and beautiful way to start the day!

It is not exactly the same as the magnificent open house day, but for those of you who aren’t lucky enough to have a Terrain within visiting distance, the photos are fun to look at!

My favorite things are always the plants and I was not disappointed.  The terrariums and the way they incorporate holiday elements are fabulous!

The miniature zinc village is one of the stars of the show…as it was last year.  It looks like some new pieces were added this year.  I am still totally in love with the zinc advent calendar!
